Stepping into the Ermenonville Forest is like opening a door onto a world of sounds and subtle movement. Along the trails, we’ll learn to “read” the forest through its birds: the Blue Tit flitting from oak to oak, the Eurasian Nuthatch running headfirst down a trunk, the Treecreeper spiralling its way back up, the Eurasian Jay—sentinel of the undergrowth—or the drumming of the Great Spotted Woodpecker.

This outing focuses on listening. You’ll learn how to tell a song from an alarm call, pick out the rhythms of the Goldcrest, the chaffinch’s “tchip”, the Green Woodpecker’s laugh, or the Robin’s melody. Visually, we’ll also see how to use shape, posture and a few key plumage details to identify a species quickly—even in backlight.

We’ll also take time to observe behaviour: courtship displays, foraging, cavity use, neighbourly squabbles… Clues that, when pieced together, reveal the forest’s daily life. Along the way, your guide will explain good birdwatching practice (where to stand, how to handle the light, how to approach without disturbance) and share simple memory tips to help you retain songs and identification features.

Open to everyone—no experience required. Curious children are welcome from around age 8 (gentle pace, regular breaks). The aim: to share a simple, lively moment outdoors, and leave with a clear method you can use to keep improving on your own.

Equipment: binoculars recommended (limited loan available), muted clothing, sturdy closed-toe shoes suitable for forest paths.
