Forest migration and autumn in the heart of the Chantilly Forest
The woodland setting of Les Commelles offers a migration experience very different from that seen in open areas. Birds use the steep-sided valley as a corridor. Highlights include:
Why go? The forest setting heightens the sensory experience light filtering through the canopy, the scent of the damp forest floor, and the rustle of fallen leaves. The 4 km trail is shaded and well-maintained, making for a comfortable walk at this time of year. The diverse habitats along the route including the reed beds of the Commelle pond, the open waters of the Neuf and Loge ponds, and the forest understory offer a wide variety of wildlife sightings.
The Commelle ponds provide an ideal setting to try your hand at birdwatching (or to hone your existing skills); the open water, reed beds, forest edges, and clearings create a vibrant mosaic of habitats. The goal of this outing is simple: take the time to observe, learn to spot key clues (silhouettes, posture, flight patterns, and calls), and identify the species you encounter.
Designed to be both educational and sociable, the outing offers tips on using binoculars and spotting scopes, simple identification methods, and pointers for long-term improvement. It is perfect for beginners, as well as for those looking to sharpen their observational skills and gain practical knowledge.
👉 What to bring: weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes; binoculars recommended (rentals available).

As a naturalist guide, passionate amateur photographer, and ornithologist at heart, I invite you to walk at my pace—the pace of attentive observation.
My story is woven between France and Taiwan, two lands that shaped how I view nature: precise and analytical on one hand, deeply sensory and respectful of living things on the other.
Birds have led me along countless trails, my camera taught me patience, and it's this enduring enthusiasm that I'm eager to share with you today.
