Forest migration and autumn in the heart of the Chantilly Forest

The woodland setting of Les Commelles offers a migration experience very different from that seen in open areas. Birds use the steep-sided valley as a corridor. Highlights include:

• Black Woodpecker - intense drumming, large hollow-filled beech trees; more audible and visible at this time of year
• Great Spotted, Green, and Middle Spotted Woodpeckers - the three other woodpecker species present; high activity levels before winter
• Kingfisher - several individuals competing for territory along the banks; lightning-fast flights and spectacular fishing dives
• Mute Swan - first wintering birds arriving on the large pond
• Eurasian Coot and Mallard - numbers rising; gathering on the water
• Great Crested Grebe - still in breeding plumage; easy to spot
• Grey Heron and Great Cormorant - resting on the banks and in dead trees

Why go? The forest setting heightens the sensory experience light filtering through the canopy, the scent of the damp forest floor, and the rustle of fallen leaves. The 4 km trail is shaded and well-maintained, making for a comfortable walk at this time of year. The diverse habitats along the route including the reed beds of the Commelle pond, the open waters of the Neuf and Loge ponds, and the forest understory offer a wide variety of wildlife sightings.

The Commelle ponds provide an ideal setting to try your hand at birdwatching (or to hone your existing skills); the open water, reed beds, forest edges, and clearings create a vibrant mosaic of habitats. The goal of this outing is simple: take the time to observe, learn to spot key clues (silhouettes, posture, flight patterns, and calls), and identify the species you encounter.
